Is there anything more fun than a general store where you can roam through aisles of miscellaneous items and always find just what you want? We think not. And apparently we’re not the only ones, because the wonderful F.H. Gillingham and Sons has been a thriving institution in Woodstock, Vermont, for 133 years.
Still located in its original building on Elm Street, Gillingham & Sons has earned its institutional status with generations of happy customers. The family business was begun in 1886 by Frank Henry Gillingham and is now run by his grandsons, Frank and Jireh. The store has grown and many things have changed over the years—there’s now a website, for instance—but one thing hasn’t: the store still proudly back everything they sell.
Vermonters through and through, the owners love to promote our state’s companies and products, and the store is a treasure-trove of such goodies. It’s known to have one of the largest selections of maple syrup and jam in the state, and just about everything else you could want. From penny candy to “darn tough socks,” retro toys and fresh-baked goods to rugs, chocolates, cast iron skillets, cozy slippers, hardware, wine and beer and a whole lot more.
Take time to wander the aisles of F.H. Gillingham and Sons and you’ll find nostalgic items you haven’t seen since childhood, perfect gifts for those special friends, and a few things you didn’t know you needed but can’t live without. It’s one of a kind.
