Science class may be a distant memory for many of us, but we’re all a bit like kids when we get a chance to explore and learn about the world around us. That’s what makes a trip to the Montshire Museum of Science such fun.
Montshire Museum of Science is a hands-on museum located in Norwich, Vermont, about a 40-minute drive from Maple Leaf Inn. Set on 110 acres near the Connecticut River, the museum offers plenty of enjoyment inside and outside with more than 140 hands-on exhibits.
The Museum is comprised of permanent and visiting exhibits, each offering adults and children a chance to interact and explore. Love animals? Stop by Discovering the Natural World and you can learn how to identify different animal skeletons. Fascinated by color and light? The Light Around Us exhibit lets you experiment with prisms, color, shadows and light. And at the Making Music exhibit, you can learn how instruments work and then create your melody. Each of these and other special exhibits delves into an area of science and offers something interesting and fun for every age.
Outside, the David Goudy Science Park is filled with dozens more engaging exhibits, such as a Wind Wall that changes colors with the breeze; and a delightful musical fence created by Paul Matisse, grandson of the impressionist painter Henri Matisse. Be sure to check out the lovely Woodland Garden—it’s a showcase for native New England flowers, plants, and trees. And take time to explore the Nature Trails, where you’ll find information on the area’s geology; an animal song kiosk that identifies New England bird and insect sounds; and many other joys of nature.
