Melaza Bistro Brings Caribbean Flavors To Vermont

You don’t expect to find the sunny flavors of the tropical islands in the heart of Vermont, but that’s just what you’ll enjoy at Melaza Bistro in Woodstock.

Located on a tree-lined street in downtown Woodstock, Melaza has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with colorful décor and tables well-spaced for conversation. But while the setting is relaxed, the service is quite polished and so is the food. “Farm, dock to table” is the attitude here, with ingredients coming from local suppliers when possible. The menu is divided into small plates (tapas) and large plates. If you’re into sharing, ordering several tapas is the way to go. Fresh made guacamole is delicious, served with crispy plantain chips. Jumbo coconut shrimp with mango sauce, a great ceviche loaded with chunks of seafood, and crispy empanadas filled with chicken or beef are other top choices.

In the large plate offerings, Melaza ‘s signature guava glazed roasted pork shank is super satisfying, as is a classic arroz con pollo—homey chicken and rice doctored with Puerto Rican spices. Non meat-eaters will de delighted with the veggie paella, and fans of Cuban sandwiches will find Melaza’s version a classic. Nothing here is off-the-charts spicy, but the flavors are all nicely-balanced.

Desserts continue the Caribbean theme with offerings such as key lime pie, tres leche cake, and caramel flan. There is a nice bar area for cocktails while you wait and a great outdoor space when the weather is suitable.
