Vermont’s Cold Hollow Cider Mill: A Tasty Tour

Autumn is the ideal time to head out to Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury Center. This is located north of our Inn, a pleasant one-hour drive that is beautiful this time of year. Outdoor setting of Cold Hollow showing covered deck and main building in the background.

The business began in 1974 when the original owners started making cider for friends. At the time, the couple was living at the base of the Cold Hollow Mountains in northwest Vermont, which is where the name for the company came from. In 1976, the business was moved to its current location in Waterbury Center. Over the years, there have been many additions and upgrades—a jelly room, production facility, cold storage rooms—in keeping with the growth of the business. The original barn houses the cider press and company store. There’s a lot to see during a visit!

Once the cider is pressed, it’s pumped into a refrigerated tank before going to the bottling plant. Now through mid-December, it’s a seven-day-a-week operation.

The other tasty item that Cold Hollow Cider Mill is cranking out—and that you won’t want to miss—is their delicious cider donuts. During peak season, they make more than 800 a day, which shows you just how good they are! In addition to the popular donuts, the bakery also makes apple pies, bars, cookies and fudge.

While at the Mill, be sure to explore Honey Bee Corner. The bees on display here pollinate the apple orchards, and the honey they produce is sold in a variety of forms. You’ll find these at the Mill Store, along with the company’s other products including maple mustard, maple butter and a tangy cider jelly. For those wishing more sustenance, the Applecore Luncheonette serves sandwiches on homemade breads and salads using local ingredients.
