It’s hard to imagine that the business two old hippies started in a former gas station is now 38 years old. Not only has it survived, Ben & Jerry’s is practically synonymous with ice cream. And not just any ice cream, but the yummy ones with crazy names and killer flavors that have all kinds of good stuff mixed in. We have our favorites (Mike and Nancy want to name your faves?); what are yours? icecream-scoop-DT42268162-PINK

From nearly the beginning, Ben and Jerry created a sensation not only with their creative pairings, but for their forward-thinking attitude and values. For instance, they only use milk from local suppliers, and began a program to help the dairies use more sustainable practices. They use eggs from cage-free hens and support fair trade practices. Early on, they also started to give back. On the company’s first anniversary (April 12), the duo held their first ever Free Cone Day, giving fee scoops to everyone, all day long. It’s a tradition that continues in all their scoop shops today. And in the 1980’s they created the Ben & Jerry’s Foundation to fund community projects.

Ice cream loving guests—basically everyone!—enjoy taking the pretty hour’s drive up to Waterbury to visit the home of the infamous maker. 30-minute tours of the factory are offered daily, year round, with manufacturing in operation Monday through Friday. The tour schedule varies based on the time of year, so be sure to check the website before visiting (or check with us). And yes, a sample of the day is included with a tour!

During July and August, you can also catch an outdoor movie at the Ben & Jerry Factory. This is their 36th year of hosting free Saturday night flicks, a favorite with families. All movies start at dusk. You can find a listing of movies and dates on the website.
