A fabulous day outing for guests, and one that always gets raves, is Simon Pearce Glassworks in neighboring Quechee. a nice half-hour drive from the Inn. The setting couldn’t be prettier. The flagship store is located in a former woolen mill that sits atop the falls of the Ottauquechee River, with views of a quaint covered bridge. The mill has been beautifully restored to house the flagship store, as well as a restaurant and bar.
Simon Pearce, the artist, was trained under European glassblowers and studied in London before moving to Vermont where he bought the mill and installed a turbine to generate hydroelectric power from the river. Attention to detail is evident everywhere, from the thoughtful design of the building to the exquisite glassworks in the store, to the fine food and table settings in the restaurant.
A good way to start a visit is by seeing a glassblowing demonstration—it’ll give you a whole new appreciation for the beautiful vases and glassware you’ll see in the store. In addition to glass, the store carries a lovely assortment of pottery dinnerware, linens, kitchen and home decorating items.
Part of the fun of coming to this location is dining here, so treat yourself to lunch. The Mill at Simon Pearce is a comfortable restaurant with brick walls, wood floors and incredible views of the river. The lunch menu offers a nice selection of lighter dishes, such as a grilled chicken sandwich, pan-seared trout, and a calamari salad. If you prefer, you can also have lunch at The Bar, which features a small plates menu.
The Quechee location is the flagship base for the company, which now has five stores in New England. There is also a factory outlet in Windsor, VT.
